Why does Gilmour Knotts Chartered Accountants need copies of my correspondence from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)?
All correspondence from CRA is sent directly to you. We do not get a copy from CRA sent to us. Therefore, the only way we will know what CRA is thinking in regards to your tax affairs is if you give us a copy any correspondence. This includes Notice of Assessments or Reassessments of your company’s year end (corporate tax), PIER reports (Pension and Insurable Earnings Review) on your corporate payroll, Notice of Assessment or Reassessment on your company’s HST report, etc.
It is important that we receive this correspondence as we may be able to address any discrepancies from what was filed on your corporate tax return with CRA. For instance, you may receive a Notice of Reassessment on your corporate year end tax return and not realize that CRA disallowed an expense you were entitled to claim. We have seen instances where CRA has made an error and we have corrected this for our client’s by challenging the reassessment. Another common document you may receive is a PIER report. Many clients do not know what this is and how to handle it. We do.
Please send us (via email, mail, fax) a copy of your corporate year end Notice of Assessment or Reassessment from CRA or contact us to discuss which documents to send us.Download a copy of this issue
